Dürnstein in the Wachau Valley
Other highlights include Oberndorf – home of ‘Silent Night’ one of the world’s most popular carols, the impressive castle at Burghausen, and the baroque riverside town of Schärding. You’ll pass through a succession of quaint, riverside villages featuring narrow lanes lined with medieval half-timbered houses. There’s no rush – this is a leisurely cycling holiday after all – so stop whenever you like for a wander around or simply to admire the view.
Much of the route is in Austria’s famed wine region and in these valleys you’ll see legions of neatly terraced vineyards cascading down to the Danube. Stop in one of the charming wine villages for an impromptu tasting session before pedalling on along the gentle riverside cycle path to your next hotel.
You’ll be cycling around 230 miles in total, covering up to 45 miles some days, but the terrain is very forgiving. You’ll mostly be following smooth cycle paths and quiet riverside roads with a few short stretches on non-paved cycle paths but nothing tricky. This tour will suit anyone with a moderate level of fitness who doesn’t mind a few hours in the saddle each day.

Leisurely, scenic, alpine cycling at its best. Cycle path heaven for most of the route.
This holiday follows the same route as our Salzburg to the Adriatic Cycling Holiday but finishes in Villach in Carinthia, rather than continuing all the way to the Adriatic. It will appeal to leisure cyclists who enjoy stunning alpine scenery and peaceful cycling on quiet cycle paths and country lanes.
Hohenwerfen Castle
The route crosses the alps, starting in the charming baroque city of Salzburg on the northern boundary of the alps and terminating in Villach, in the southern Austrian state of Carinthia.
A peaceful riverside cycle path will lead you south from Salzburg to the charming alpine town of Golling. Then it\'s on to Werfen with the impressive Hohenwerfen Castle glaring down from it\'s lofty perch. After a night in the famous winter sports resort of St. Johann-im-Pongau, you take on the undulating but incredibly scenic ride up the romantic Gastein valley to the old spa resort of Bad Gastein with a waterfall tumbling through the village centre. A 15 minute train ride transports you and your bike under the spine of the alps to the sunny Möll valley from where you follow an idyllic, gently descending route through truly awe inspiring mountain scenery to the historic pilgrims\' town of Spittal. The final stage follows the meandering Drau river to the bustling town of Villach close to the Italian and Slovenian borders.
This is a leisurely cycling holiday with, for the most part, easy daily routes of between 30 and 40 kms, however there is one longer day of 60km which includes a couple of short but steep climbs. For this reason we recommend e-bikes for most casual cyclists with an average level of fitness. You\'ll be cycling on cycle paths and quiet country lanes for the most part with a couple of sections on busier roads where this is unavoidable.

Stunning Lake Bled
You’ll start in the charming city of Salzburg, birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and then head south along the beautiful Salzach Valley, past the lofty Hohenwerfen Castle, one of the oldest continuously inhabited castles in Europe, to the pretty alpine town of Bishofshofen.
In the Gastein Valley you’ll visit the beautiful town of Bad Hofgastein as well as its regal neighbour Badgastein with its grand old hotels and tumbling waterfall. A short train ride will then carry you deep beneath the towering central spine of the alps to the pretty village of Mallnitz from where you’ll gently descend the peaceful and glorious Möll Valley.
After a brief sojourn into Italy you cross into Slovenia and follow a peaceful, green valley to the alpine resort of Kranjska Gora situated on the edge of the Triglav National Park with its towering granite peaks.
A final day of cycling along one of the prettiest valleys of all brings you to Lake Bled, one of the most scenic lakes in the Alps and a fitting finale to such a scenic route.
All along the route there are varied and interesting places to stop and explore, such as the largest ice cave in the world in the Salzach Valley, the deep Liechtenstein Gorge near Bishofshofen and the Mölltal Glacier near Mallnitz. There are also stunning waterfalls to stop and admire and crystal clear lakes that tempt you to stop for a swim.
For an alpine route this is relatively easy cycling. There are undulations along the way with one notable climb as you ascend the scenic Gastein valley to Badgastein on day 2.
